Your child takes apart every toy to see how it works, or asks questions about space at bedtime that you can’t answer. You’ve heard that STEM classes could help, but the term covers everything from robotics clubs to maths tutoring. This guide explains what STEM really means, what children actually do in a good STEM program, and how to find one in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or online.
Quick answer: STEM is short for science, technology, engineering and maths. For children, a good STEM program means building and testing things, such as games, robots, 3D designs and simple AI, rather than memorising facts. In Abu Dhabi and across the UAE you’ll find STEM clubs at school, centres, holiday camps, competitions and live online classes. The best choice is hands-on, matched to your child’s age, and taught by someone who gives your child real attention.
What is STEM education?
STEM education teaches science, technology, engineering and maths together, through projects. Instead of learning each subject separately from a textbook, children use all four to solve a problem: coding a game uses logic and maths, building a robot uses engineering and electronics, and training a simple AI model uses data and science.
You may also see STEAM, which adds the arts. In practice, most good children’s programs already include creative work, such as designing game characters, animations or 3D models, so the difference matters less than whether the classes are hands-on.
Why STEM matters for children
The point of STEM at a young age isn’t to train future engineers. It’s to build habits that help in every subject:
- Breaking a big problem into small steps, which is what coding and robotics teach from the first lesson.
- Testing, failing and fixing: a robot that turns the wrong way or a game that crashes teaches persistence better than a worksheet.
- Confidence with technology, so children understand the tools around them instead of only using them.
- Turning ideas into something real, which is often what keeps a child interested.
“Robotics is fun because children can actually see what their code is doing. And when the robot goes the wrong way, that’s when the problem-solving starts.”
— Harika E, iCodejr teacher
What do kids do in STEM classes?
Here’s what each STEM subject looks like in practice, with examples of projects from our own learning paths:
| Subject | What children do | Example projects |
|---|---|---|
| Coding | Write instructions for computers, first with blocks, then with typed code | A Scratch arcade game, a racing game, a password checker in Python |
| Robotics and electronics | Build circuits and robots, then program them | An LED badge and a light sensor with a micro:bit; a traffic light and a line-following robot with Arduino |
| Artificial intelligence | Train simple AI models and build AI into projects | A voice-controlled game, an app that recognises objects through the camera, a chatbot |
| Engineering and design | Design and model objects in 3D | A 3D keychain designed in Tinkercad |
| Maths | Build number sense and problem-solving | Logic puzzles and maths challenges matched to your child’s level |
Our guide to robotics or coding helps if you’re not sure where your child should start, and our AI for kids guide explains what children can do with AI at each age.
STEM by age
STEM grows with your child. Roughly:
| Age | What fits | Learning path |
|---|---|---|
| 5–6 | Picture-block coding, simple AI and robotics games on a tablet, logic puzzles | KG-1 |
| 7–8 | Block coding on a computer, first AI projects, a choice of coding or robotics | Ages 7–8 |
| 9–10 | Bigger games, first typed code, micro:bit electronics, 3D design | Ages 9–10 |
| 11–14 | Python and C++, apps, Arduino robotics, AI projects | Ages 11–14 |
| 15–18 | AI Developer track, web development, advanced robotics | Python |

STEM programs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai: your options
Families in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the rest of the UAE usually choose between five kinds of STEM program:
- School STEM clubs. Convenient and social, but often short, with a large group and a fixed topic.
- STEM and robotics centres. Hands-on and in person, usually in groups, with travel time and fixed timetables.
- Holiday camps. A good way to try STEM in a school break, though progress usually stops when the camp ends.
- Competitions and events. Great for motivation and teamwork. Our free inter-school hackathon, Code Battle, added its first Abu Dhabi chapter in the 2023 season (it ran online in January 2024), and our Minecraft coding workshops for the Abu Dhabi Gaming Council in July and August 2026 had rows of young Abu Dhabi coders building in Minecraft Education. Older students can also look at AI competitions in the UAE.
- Live online classes. One-to-one with a teacher from home, with no travel, and a family in Al Ain or Ruwais gets the same teacher as one in Abu Dhabi city. Our guide to online coding classes explains how they work.
If you’re looking specifically for coding, our guide to coding classes for kids in Abu Dhabi compares the options in more detail.
How to choose a STEM program
Whatever kind of program you’re looking at, ask:
- Will my child build things? Look for projects every week, not just videos or worksheets.
- Is it right for their age? A 6-year-old and a 13-year-old need very different tools.
- How much attention will they get? One-to-one or a small group makes the biggest difference for beginners.
- Can they move between subjects? Many children start with coding and discover they love robotics, or the other way round.
- Does it fit your week? Look for times that work around school, including weekends.
- Can you try it first? A free trial shows you more than any brochure.
Want to see if STEM clicks for your child?
Try a free one-to-one lesson in coding, robotics or AI first. A teacher works with your child live online on a small project, and you're welcome to watch part of it. There's nothing to pay.
STEM classes at iCodejr
At iCodejr, every class in our packages is live, online and one-to-one, in English or Arabic, for ages 5 to 18. One package of class credits covers coding, robotics, AI and maths, so your child can explore more than one area of STEM without starting again. For robotics, we ship a kit to families in the UAE while your child starts with the coding the robot will need.
The first lesson costs nothing. After that you pay AED 60 to AED 75 per class plus VAT, with bigger packages costing less per class, and our prices guide sets it all out.
Ask about this season's offer before you choose
We run offers several times a year, including in winter and summer. Before you choose a package, message us and we'll tell you what's on right now.
“I like giving students room to experiment. Sometimes their version of the project turns out to be more interesting than the one I had planned.”

Frequently asked questions
What is STEM education for kids?
It’s learning science, technology, engineering and maths together through hands-on projects, such as coding a game, building a robot or designing something in 3D.
How is STEAM different from STEM?
STEAM adds the arts. Most good children’s programs already include creative work, like designing characters or animations, so the label matters less than whether children build things.
How young can a child start STEM?
From about 5, with picture-block coding and simple robotics and AI games on a tablet. Around 7 or 8, most can move on to coding on a computer.
What STEM subjects does iCodejr teach?
Coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, maths, and app, web and game development, with 3D design for older children.
Are online STEM classes as good as in-person ones?
For most children, live one-to-one online classes give more teacher attention than a group class. In-person events such as hackathons add the social side.
Do we need to buy equipment for STEM classes?
A laptop or desktop with a camera is enough for most classes (a tablet for ages 5–6). For robotics, we ship a kit to families in the UAE, charged at cost.
Is STEM good for children who find maths hard?
It often helps, because maths is used to solve a real problem, such as making a game score work or a robot turn the right way, rather than practised on its own.
Are there STEM competitions for kids in the UAE?
Yes. Code Battle, our free inter-school hackathon, runs every year, and there are AI and robotics competitions for older students.
Are your STEM classes available in Abu Dhabi?
Yes. Our classes are online, so children anywhere in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or the rest of the UAE can join, at times that suit your family.
Is there a free STEM trial class?
Yes. Your child’s first lesson is free and one-to-one, in coding, robotics or AI, and parents are welcome to watch part of it.
