Doing all of them would mean a different drive every afternoon. So how do you choose the after-school activities that are right for your child, and for your week?

Sport gets children moving after a day at a desk, and it teaches them how to lose gracefully, which is harder than it sounds. Music and drama are often where shy children find their voice. Art gives quieter children space to think. Language and public-speaking clubs help children say what they mean, in English or Arabic.
STEM activities, such as coding, robotics and maths, have grown fastest. They’re the activities where children build something they can show you: a game, a robot that follows a line, a quiz for their little sister. Why do after-school activities matter?
School is structured, graded and busy. After-school activities give children something different: a place to be good at something that has nothing to do with marks. They meet children outside their class, get to move after sitting all day, and learn what they enjoy, which is harder to find out than it sounds.

For 5-year-olds, keep it light: one or two activities, short sessions, and plenty of free play. Older teenagers often care about activities that lead somewhere, such as a portfolio, a competition or a university application. When do after-school activities fit in the UAE school week?
Timing in the UAE has its own rhythm, and it shapes what’s realistic.
- Friday is a half day at most schools in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, so Friday afternoons are popular for activities. In Sharjah, Friday is part of the weekend.
- Saturdays and Sundays are the main slots for weekend activity classes and Saturday programmes, especially sports and music.
- In the hottest months, outdoor sport moves to early mornings, evenings or indoor venues.
- Many schools run their own after-school clubs (ECAs) straight after the bell, which saves a drive. Some are free and some are paid; ask your school for its list each term.
Online classes are the easiest to fit around all of this. You pick the days and times, they can run after dinner or at the weekend, and they carry on during travel.
How much do after-school activities cost in the UAE?
Prices vary a lot between activities and providers, so compare what’s included, not just the headline fee. Questions worth asking:
- Is it paid per term, per month or per class? What if we miss a week?
- Is there a registration fee, or a uniform, kit or instrument to buy?

How do I choose the right after-school activity?
- Begin with your child’s favourite things. A child who builds Lego all weekend may love robotics. A child who’s always performing may love drama.
- Balance the week. Something active, something creative, something that builds a skill.
- Do the drive test. If getting there means two hours in traffic each week, it may not last past the first term.
- Book a trial first. One session tells you more than any brochure.
- Watch for tiredness. If your child is exhausted or dreading an activity, drop one, and don’t feel guilty about it.
- Give it a term. Most activities feel hard at first, so allow six to eight weeks before you decide.
