Three weeks off school, the best weather of the year, and children who might be bored by day two? Here’s how to make this winter break fun, restful and worth it.

It’s the best time of year to get children outdoors: desert and mangrove trips, stargazing and the city’s outdoor attractions. Pair that with one indoor skill, such as reading, a building project or coding, so the break is restful and your child goes back to school with something new.
Under the UAE’s unified school calendar, winter break starts on Monday 14 December 2026 and schools reopen on Monday 4 January 2027 (The National). That’s three weeks, a week shorter than last year. Some schools on other curricula follow different dates, so check your school’s calendar before booking anything.
Outdoor Learning: Make the Most of the Weather
From December to February the UAE is at its most comfortable, so this is the season for being outside. Each idea below has a “learning angle” to talk about on the way home.

- Etihad Museum, Dubai. The story of the UAE’s founding, told in an interactive way that suits primary-age children.
- Expo City Dubai. Sustainability and science exhibits in a walkable outdoor space, which suits the cooler months.
- Global Village and Dubai Miracle Garden. Both are seasonal winter favourites. Learning angle: at Global Village, pick three pavilions and find each country on a map at home.
Learning at Home for the Quieter Days
- A family reading challenge. Set a target for the break and visit a library such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Library in Dubai to choose books together.
- Kitchen maths. Doubling a recipe, weighing ingredients and dividing portions are fractions in disguise.
- A build project. Cardboard marble runs, a model of a famous building, or a simple bird feeder.
- Board games and puzzles. Strategy games build the same planning skills children use in coding.
- Start a coding project. Younger children can try ScratchJr on a tablet; older ones can make a simple game in Scratch.
Learn a New Skill This Winter: Coding, AI and Robotics
If your child wants something more structured, winter break is a good time to start live classes, because the routine is lighter and there’s time to practise between sessions.

Holidays usually mean more screen time. The difference is how it’s used. Watching is passive; building a game, animation or story is active.
